february 28th, i'm amy coveno. we go on the air at this hour virginia. a police officer with ties to new hampshire has been killed in the line of duty. prince william county officer ashley guindon and two other officers were responding to a domestic-related incident when they arrived at the address. three officers were shot, guindon died from her injuries. news 9 confirmed merrimack police were called upon to notify her family in merrimack of her passing. officer guindon was just sworn into the police department this friday, this was her very first solo shift. the suspect was taken into custody. we'll bring you new developments as they happen. now, let's get a check of the forecast and you're talking another warm-up, josh. josh: yes, it's certainly going

temperatures will be. on the seacoast, a milder start than the last couple of days, we're in the 30's, as high as 36 and 37 in some warmer locations. you can see some breaks in the clouds already and you'll continue it see that through the day today, also to our west on the canadian border, there are snow showers and some of those flurries and snow showers could make it into the mountains. look at the clouds and sunshine, and temperatures anywhere from 41 in the north country to upper 40's and low to mid 50's across central and southern new hampshire, so, yeah, well above average for today. how long that trend lasts and when our next storm could be rising in our forecast coming up. amy: happening right now, crews are battling a two alarm fire at an apartment in laconia. officials were called to the apartment a little after 4:00 this morning. no other details have been released. we'll bring you information as it comes into our news room. turning now to commitment 2016

clinton's camp is celebrating after a landslide win in south carolina. the results are in. clinton took 73% of the vote in the palmetto state democratic primary and bernie sanders won 26% of 99% reporting. aixa diaz is in our washington d.c. bureau with a breakdown of the results. >> hillary clinton gains momentum moving forward after winning the first in the south primary. >> this campaign goes national. >> a divisive victory for hillary clinton winning overwhelming support of african-americans. the democratic front runner opponent. >> we're taking every vote in every state, we're not taking anything or anyone for granted. >> i congratulate secretary

>> sanders who admits he was all, but unknown in south carolina when his campaign began and spent the day stumping in texas and minnesota. and the vermont senator, whose only victory so far has been in new hampshire says his campaign is just beginning and they won't stop now. >> i'm going to be asking for your vote on tuesday, but i need more than that from you. i need your help after the general election because i can't do it alone. >> delegates from 11 states will be on tuesday. amy: presidential hopefuls stayed on the campaign trail. donald trump campaigned with chris christie and cruz was in arkansas in little rock.

st. anselm professor galdiery believes that hillary clinton-- >> i think it shows she's right on the campaign after losing new hampshire and she's running in a lot of favorable territory. amy: we've learned both democratic candidates will be back in new england this week, campaigning in massachusetts on monday. clinton will stump in springfield and boston and senator sanders will visit boston for an evening rally. health officials are warning of a mump's outbreak. and adam sexton has the details. >> health officials at st. anselm college thought they had a case of mumps on their hands earlier this week. the symptoms matched, but came

>> wield two other members of the men's hockey team that came in with the same symptoms, low grade fever and swollen glands. >> they ran tests and cases of mumps and all of them with routine contact through the hockey team. state epidemiologist benjamin chan says even though the majority on campus are immunized, that vaccine is not a brick wall. >> with two doses of the vaccine it's 88% effective of getting mumps. any future cases are expected to be mild, but doctors want to be proactive to protect more vulnerable populations on campus. we do want to prevent this from spreading to other individuals that may not be totally immune. people that may not be able to get the vaccine, that includes pregnant women or immuno compromised and so we want to prevent that from spreading.

spread of mumps expected to be blunted now that everyone is gone on vacation. >> typically the mumps incubation is 25 days so we are in that window. our students now are on spring break so hopefully that will decrease their risk as far as the close contact goes. >> in manchester, adam sexton, wmur news 9. amy: senator kelly ayotte is co-sponsoring legislation to help prevent eating disorders. she was at the eating disorder in concord. it indicates professionals about anorexia, bulimia. the cannon mount tram is running after being shut down for two weeks. on valentine's day, 40 people were stuck about 40 feet in the air. the malfunction that caused the

>> good morning. it is 6:10 and we're taking a look at the lakes regionment partly cloudy skies out there. and that's what we're going to see through the day today. partly sunny skies, a mixture of clouds and sunshine and the big story today will be the much milder temperatures to tell you how warm it's getting in the forecast just a few minutes away.

in mourning after three people were killed and 14 injured in a workplace shooting. yesterday neighbors parked their riding lawn mowers on streets in memory of the three employees who lost their lives when a co-worker opened fire thursday. 14 others were injured after the alleged gunman, cedric ford was shot by a responding police officer. >> a computer system holding financial aid has been hacked at a college in california. university of california berkley says it holds data of 80,000 students, alumni, current and former employees. the university says there's no evidence that information was stolen, but is warning everyone to watch for signs. the university was in the middle of patching a security flaw when this hack happened. the fbi has been notified. >> speaking of college. unh is making is it studying beer a reality. for the first time the

offering a minor in brewing for students, helping students get jobs in craft beer, a growing industry. in new hampshire there are more than 50 breweries. there's a testing lab and plant which will open in 2017. hollywood's biggest night. we're hours away from the oscars. we'll take a look at tonight's big event. >> it's 6:13 on a sunday morning, you're looking live at

>> now, meteorologist josh judge with your forecast. josh: starting out with clouds and the bigger story, the milder temperatures, we're already seeing them and it will only become more pronounced through the day. portsmouth at 37 degrees and a southwest wind at about 9 miles per hour. visibility is good and the dew points are low, so it's a dry air out there. but, take a look at the temperatures we're starting off with. yesterday morning, these were certainly much, much colder and the next last couple of days have seen some chilly nights, but we're starting off milder today and that's as a warmer air mass is pushing into the state. so, we're in the 30's. just about everywhere, in the state right now. and we had clouds throughout the overnight, you can see breaks beginning to develop and look for that trend to continue through the day today.

times of pure sunshine as well. northern new hampshire, we will be watching as a cold front is dragging itself down southward and stalling over the mountains today because of that, some of these snow showers or flurries could drop into the mountains in time. as temperatures warm-up this afternoon, a couple could turn into a couple of mixed rain or snow showers fairly limited, but certainly a possibility, particularly on the western slopes of the mountains. you notice off to our west here, it's clear and we've got clouds overhead. it's just going to be a mixture of the two. the temperatures starting off mild and going even milder as this warmer air is pushing into the state for today and tomorrow, and for a good portion of tuesday as well. although tuesday begins a cooling process. on the other side of the nation way over here, coming ashore is a storm system. it dips down and then comes back at us later in the middle part of the week with the chance of some snow and rain, mixed

that system as we go closer to it. we'll be getting a better idea of that exact track where it heads. it's only just coming ashore right now. so, for today, clouds and sunshine, a few flurries possible in the mountains, and of course, you'll be noticing those warmer temperatures out there today and any sunshine we get just makes it feel warmer. overtight tonight and into tomorrow morning, clouds thicken up a little bit as this front approaches and brings the threat of some showers. for the morning and into the mid day hours of tomorrow, they pull away and more sunshine tomorrow afternoon. another mild day for tomorrow, tuesday it, it begins a little cooler as clouds and slightly chillier air begins to stream on in and that sets the stage for tuesday night into wednesday for that weather system which could begin as a wintery mix and go over for rain. highs today are amazing. lower 40's in northern new hampshire and upper 40's and lower 50's everywhere else. by amazing, i mean in temperatures of where they are

not as cold again for tonight and look at this, tomorrow, another mild day with temperatures once again in the 40's and 50's. so, we'll wrap up this weekend with a big difference from yesterday. yesterday wasn't bad, but today will be a good, at least 10 to 12, 13, 14 degrees warmer than yesterday and there's a look at your week ahead. mild in the front half. amy: big swings there. josh: that's what this weather has been about, hasn't it? >> it has indeed. i spent my evening doing homework in preparation of the oscars. josh: really? the 88th annual oscars? >> those indeed, yeah, they're later today, but hollywood is in full preparation right now for the big awards show. josh: right, this year, buzz over bold-face names that could strike oscar gold. and also controversy over who wasn't nominated, lauren lister

>> no one covers new hampshire like we do, now, wmur news 9 this morning. >> and we are continuing to follow breaking news out of virginia this morning. a police officer with ties to merrimack has been killed in the line of duty. police officer ashley guindon was respond to go a domestic dispute in virginia when she was shot and killed. a line of more than 100 cars was seen escorting her body from the hospital. she was sworn in on friday and this was her very first solo shift. merrimack police tell us they were contacted by prince county police to notify the family here of her passing. a suspect is in custody described as a member of the military. we'll continue to follow this breaking news and bring you new information as we get it.

the weather with a look at today's fork. >> it's a mild cart, much warmer than the last couple of days at the same time and we're starting off in the 30's. here is look at partly cloudy skies at the seacoast, and 30's throughout the granite state as you can see, everywhere pretty much reporting 30 or higher. and the clouds have thinned overnight. we'll see clouds and sunshine through the day and there could be some flurries, a snow showers or a mixed rain and snow shower this afternoon in the north country. close to a cold front there. otherwise, south of the notches. partly sunny, temperatures topping off most places between 50 and 55 degrees. a few spots maybe not quite getting to 50, but it will be a much-- well above average temperature, rather, than what we would normally see this time of year for one of the last few days of february. we'll talk about how long the current weather lasts and

amy: despite parts of open water on lake winnipesaukee, the ice derby continues today, officials decided there is enough good ice. >> derby organizers knew there would be less people because of the ice conditions, but when you look at the catch board and the crowd so far, the turnout has exceeded expectations. >> it's a very, very large lake trout. >> it could be the catch the weekend. weighing 11 pounds, reeling in this lake trout from lake sunapee. >> it took a while to get in, taking line and it was a good fight. >> anglers are trying to catch the biggest fish with a shot at the $15,000 grand prize. joshua has the largest rainbow trout.

and the biggest one we caught, that i've ever caught. >> the ice fishing derby was almost canceled because of the conditions. >> we decided because of the weather there would be enough ice on most of the lakes to be able to do this. >> official caution, people still need to be careful. so far there haven't been any reported incidents and derby organizers say the turnout has been bigger than expected. >> we're thrilled and we're getting people from all over the state who are bringing fish in. >> many fishers who usually set up on meredith bay moved their bob houses this year to another lake. >> you've got to be careful where you go, normally we don't fish this area. we're here because of the ice here. >> we feel good, there's 12 inches of ice, happy to be here today, but a quieter scene and good for the kids, kids are happy to be skating around, it's a good day. >> i think that hockey is really cool and i think it's really fun. >> while several prizes were given out at derby headquarters on saturday. >> we're about to do the drawing

>> fishers are hoping their catch will win them more. >> it's a good fish, but there's definitely been bigger fish in the past, so we'll see how it goes. >> and the derby ends on sunday. >> in meredith, mike cronin, news 9. amy: good luck, if you're headed out on the ice, take the forecast with you with our app, free for iphone and android devices. police say shell stations on long hill road had skimming devices hidden inside the pumps where customers could not see them. police don't know how long the devices were on the pumps or how many people were affected. credit card skimmers were also discovered at a gas station in goffstown just last month and more were found in massachusetts. police say there are some simple steps you can take to protect yourself. first, pull on the card reader

that could be a sign of a skimmer. and check for tiny pin holes, they could be the sign of a camera to steal your pin number. >> yesterday the portsmouth community said goodbye to eileen foley, she died monday at age of 97. she held numerous terms on city council and eight terms as mayor. foley also served several terms as a state senator making trips to japan and england. she's also known as a loving mother and grandmother. >> she wasn't a politician to me, she was a warmhearted, italian, strong, witty grandma who treated me as one of her own, home is where grandma was. >> she helped me take my career path, helping people overcome extreme travesties.

police and fire, honor guard, before heading to cavalry cemetery. to commitment 2016, the results from south carolina's democratic primary are in. hillary clinton secured a big win in south carolina, defeating persony sanders by a wide margin. with 53 delegates at stake, clinton has one three states and sanders won one, new hampshire. now the two are looking ahead to super tuesday. we're deep in the heart of political season and you've heard a lot of talk about delegates the past few months. how do they decide a party's nominee. a quick study in u.s. presidential politics from cnn's zane asher. >> you've soon them wearing funny hats and waving signs at national party conventions. >> delegates. >> delegate. >> delegates. >> delegates. >> and what exactly is a delegate? why are they so important to the

they come from all 50 states, washington d.c. and every u.s. territory. bigger, more popular states like california, texas, florida and new york have more of them. for the most part, candidates win delegates through primaries and caucuses. while the rules vary from state to state, generally, more votes means more delegates. this summer, thousands of delegates will come together at their national party conventions. where they declare the support for a specific candidate. >> ohio, madam secretary, casts all 188 votes for the president and the next president of the united states, barack obama. >> in order to become the party's nominee for president, a candidate must receive a majority of delegates. for republicans, 1,237 is the magic number for democrats, 2,383. and there's an additional wrinkle or democrats, super delegates. these are elected officials, governors, senators, and party members.

>> welcome to new hampshire's business. i'm fred kocher. i'm going to put some items on the scene and see if any are of interest to you. these are bills in the legislature or topics, opioid, heroin, fentanyl, and the issues surrounding them. the gas line in southern new hampshire and northern pass. medicaid expansion will, will it continue? and limits on deductions in business and electricity and temporary workers rights. with me is the senior vice-president of the industry association of new hampshire. welcome. >> thank you, fred, always nice to be here. >> let's go right down the list. you follow these things over day. the opioid fentanyl heroin plan, where is that? >> the result of the special senate last fall, the senate

in legislative terms, it was fast-tracked and got through house and senate to the governor's desk quickly. there are lingering bills dealing with how do we provide better drug education in our public schools that are close to passing. there's senate and house versions and they need to iron out the differences, but it's a huge issue and one that occupied even the attention of presidential candidates when they were here. >> that's true. and one of the key items that passed was a drug court. >> a drug court and increasing penalties for fentanyl in some ways has been more damaging than heroin use, if you can imagine that. >> yeah, right. the pipeline and northern pass two key pieces of legislation in that session. let's talk about each one quickly. >> they're controversial projects. >> lot of opposition. >> as most of your viewers know, the kinder morgan pipeline, natural gas pipeline in the southern part of the state and northern pass designed to bring

they're both in various processes in terms of getting deciding location done and proper approvals, but there are a number of bills designed to either slow down the approval process or bring it to a halt. >> the town of milford and 20 or 21 other communities are intervening with ferc, federal energy regulation commission. >> it's well-organized, on the other hand, new hampshire is paying the highest electricity rates in the country and most people point to lack of energy infrastructure as being a prime reason. >> why northern pass, 150 petitions to the committee. now medicaid expansion? where is that? it looks like it's going well. >> somewhat. >> in the legislature. >> the expansion bill passed two years ago, it was designed to sunset at the end of this year by design.

residents are a part of the program and for the first time receiving health insurance, so, in some ways, the program has gone extraordinarily well, and what's being hammered out in the house right now. the house has given preliminary approval, but the house finance committee is taking a closer look. >> the importance of businesses and transfer of cost over to business premiums, right? >> right, those people that were previously uninsured were still getting health care. it was usually in the emergency room, which is the most expensive, and those costs were transferred primarily to the business community in the form of premiums. >> there's a limit on expense deductions, for management of businesses, right? >> it's called a 179 deduction, it's a part of the federal tax deduction for businesses on the purchase of capital equipment, new hampshire has a similar deduction in the state, but it's capped at $25,000, which is

extraordinary extraordinarily low, by example, the cap is $5,000. they're both trying to raise the level of the cap. >> net metering and electricity. net metering, when you have like solar energy and you generate more and sell it back. >> if you're a solar customer, residential or commercial and you have solar cells that are giving you electricity, there are time when you have more than you need. net metering allows you to sell it back to the universities. >> and the bill would raise a cap, right? >> it raises a cap. the utilities are required to purchase this power up to their percentage of the cap. we're hitting that 50 megawatt cap so the bills would raise it to 100 mega watts. >> real quick. temporary workers rights, these are big employment industry in new hampshire, growing into a major industry employing thousands of people.

yeah, you'll be able to head outside and not to dress quite as fully, take that in the right way. of course. temperatures 34 degrees in samburton samburton. less layers today. starting in the 30's now, a little bit after breeze out of the southwest and check out those temperatures, we're in the 30's. some are mild as temperatures found at the coast and in the mountains to the north. 36 degrees in whitefield, 37 at the seacoast and more temperatures for you. our spotter temperatures showing temperatures southeastern new hampshire, southwestern new hampshire, upper 30's and lower 40's. more in central parts of the state and northern new hampshire, upper 20's and some lower 30's well above average for this time of year. that's for sure. is there more on track for here? yes, the next couple of days are certainly above normal.

well as tomorrow and then tuesday, still pretty warm day. and wednesday, a chance, it could go either way, but right now, leaning toward the milder look at wednesday, as well. so, monday, tomorrow morning, a few showers around in the morning and perhaps in through about lunchtime and then by afternoon, turning to sunshine. next weather system to watch is tuesday night into wednesday, if it comes in a little bit colder, it would start off as a wintery mix and go over to rain and a chance it starts out as rain, too, depending on the exact track of the system arriving on wednesday. for today, clouds and sunshine and a few flurries and as temperatures warm, maybe some sprinkles in far northern new hampshire. here are the milder temperatures screaming in today. we're going to watch the system out on the west coast. it makes its way toward us, as we go through the next several days and that's what's going object arriving here around wednesday, we'll take it one step at a time with a look today. clouds and sunshine back and forth. mild temperatures 40's and 50's with some flurries or a snow

then this afternoon, a couple of sprinkles a possibility in the mountains here and there. cloudy night. here comes the next front. it moves through as mostly rain mid day and then clear out for the afternoon and go back to more sunshine yet again. all right, let's take a look at what's to come today. those temperatures will be so much warmer than you would expect. typically today would be the last day of february, thanks to leap year, tomorrow will be, but we'll be wrapping up february with temperatures in the 40's and 50's. look at those temperatures for today. upper 40's, low to mid 50's and then 30's tonight. tomorrow, we will see a couple of rain showers as i mentioned, around in the morning and mid day hours, sunshine in the afternoon, and temperatures into the upper 40's and lower 50's again. a little bit cooler by mid week and we'll watch that weather system tuesday night into wednesday. >> all over the place with the temperatures. josh: it is, but it's certainly

a case of mumps on their hands, the symptoms matched, but tests came back negative. >> we had two other members of the men's hockey team who came in with the same symptoms, low grade fever and swollen parotid grand. >> that's when they ordered more intensive tests and two cases of mumps with three others classified as suspected cases. all of them with routine contact through the hockey team. the state epidemiologist benjamin chan says that even though the majority of students are immunized, that vaccine isn't a brick wall. >> with two doses it's 88% effective at preventing mumps. it's still possible that students could get mumps. >> any future cases are expected to be mild, but doctors want to be proactive to protect more vulnerable populations on campus. >> we want to prevent this from spreading to other individuals

how long it lasts in your forecast coming up. >> right now, a kansas town is in morning after three people were killed and 14 injured in a workplace shooting. yesterday they parked riding lawn mowers in memory of the three excel employees who were killed. cedric ford was shot by a responding police officer. a computer system holding financial aid information has been hacked at a college in california. the university of california berkley said that hackers broke into the system that holds data of about 80,000 students, alumni, current and former employees. the university says there's no evidence that any information was stolen, but it is warning everyone to watch for signs of that. and the university was in the middle of patching a security flaw when this hack happened. the fbi has been notified. speaking of college, unh is now making studying beer a reality.

>> now, meteorologist josh judge with your forecast. josh: we've seen the clouds clearing south of the white mountains and we'll see some clouds at times and some sun. here is a look at the big lake from weir's beach. some cloud, some sun, some thin clouds out there. they're thicker in the mountains, but 37 degrees, pretty mild way to start on a late february morning. this early in the morning, and look at temperatures all around the region. it's 38 in plymouth and concord and portsmouth and the average high temperature for today is 38. winds rather light.

5 to 15 miles per hour today so it will feel pretty good out there with warming conditions, some sunshine, mixed with the clouds and the winds not too tough to take. and there's our almanac showing what i was talking about, 38 degrees the average high, the normal low is in the teens in central and southern new hampshire so you can see how far above average we are right now. something else to note, the times there. the sunrise and sunset times getting a little earlier in the morning and a little later in the day and of course, next month when we spring forward in march, we'll see that change in a big way as well. all right, a look at a cold front that's been dropping down out of canada and it's stalling just over northern new hampshire today. that will keep the clouds locked in tight in a lot of places around the mountains. there may be some breaks of sun, but sometimes where some flurries or a snow shower breakout and this afternoon as temperatures rise in the north country and could you could see some sprinkles there. south of the mountains, dry, a
